certification Modular Courses

Basic Keelboat courses can be taken as one day modules in order to accommodate any schedule and let students focus on topics of their choice

Basic Courses

Our Basic Courses are designed to provide an enjoyable introduction to the sport of sailing. Our courses will give you the necessary basic knowledge to enjoy sailing.

Cruising Courses

When you’re ready to step up to handling a larger cruising sailboat, we can help. We also have refresher courses for those who have some “big boat” experience but want to hone their skills.

Sun

You wouldn't play football without pads, don't go sailing without the right sun protection. But what is the right sun protection? Here are the 5 most important things to remember. (These are experience-based tips and should not be taken as medical advice)

  1. Sunscreen is usually good for two to three years but check for an expiration date. If you're not sure, don't risk it. You should apply the sunscreen 30 minutes before going out and plan to reapply every 90 minutes. You will want to reapply after swimming and may want to reapply more often than 90 minutes if you are getting wet, or sweating profusely. Additionally, be cautious of sunscreens with the chemical avobenzone. Avobenzone is what causes rust like stains on your clothing.
  2. Baseball caps do not mean you do not have to wear sunscreen. While a ball cap helps, it only protects you from the light that is coming straight down and it does not protect your ears or neck. You will want to combine both a hat, preferably one with an all-around brim 3 inches or more, with sunscreen. Don't forget your neck! One of the most common areas to forget when protecting yourself from the sun is your neck. While a hat with a 3+ inch brim will help, you will want to remember to apply sunscreen to the back of your neck and continue to reapply. You can also consider wearing clothing to protect your neck. One solution for this is the buff, often worn with a ball cap to protect the back of your neck and ears.
  3. Protect your Eyes! While you may ok not wear sunglasses on land, the sun reflects off the water adding more strain to your eyes. In the short term, this will likely just give you a headache, however, over a long period of time, overexposure to UV light may cause cataracts. Polarized sunglasses are the best at protecting your eyes though something is better than nothing.
  4. Just because you are wearing a long sleeve shirt, does not mean you are protected from the sun. Your shirt may still be allowing the sun to penetrate through to your skin. You can test this by holding your shirt up to the light, if you can see through it, it is not offering a lot of protection. When choosing clothing for sun protection, check to see if it has a UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) rating. The number represents the fraction of UV light allowed through. A shirt showing a UPF 50 rating only allows 1/50th of UV light through, so it is blocking 98% of harmful light. Your clothing will offer less protection if it is tight to your skin or wet. This is especially important for those buff wearers out there to remember. If your buff is too tight, it will stretch the fabric and allow more UV light to penetrate.
  5. If you are planning on swimming, please use environmentally friendly sunscreens. Many sunscreens contain the chemical oxybenzone which is extremely harmful to reefs. The chemical has been found to kill young coral and exacerbates coral bleaching. A quick google search will provide you with plenty of reef safe options.

Facedocks made easy

Docking can be one of the most stressful things you do, especially when short-handed. This 8 step face docking technique is easy to do with just two people. (lessons on fenders and lines will be a separate article)

1 The easiest docking to do is with your bow to the wind and the dock on your port side. Approach the dock slowly at a 45-degree angle with all fenders out and lines ready. A rule of thumb for speed would be to proceed as if you did not have reverse.

Approach

2. Begin to turn parallel to the dock when you are within 1/2 a boat length of the dock.

Begin Turning Parallel

3. Keep your bow as close to the dock as you can while turning parallel.

Keep to Bow Close

4. When your bow is nearing the bow cleat on the dock, shift to reverse and allow prop walk to bring the stern of your boat parallel to the dock.

5. Shift to neutral and attach your spring line

6. Shift to idle forward, and turn the wheel away from the dock. This will hold your boat against the dock while you make the rest of your lines.

7. Attach your bow a stern line next, then bring your engine to neutral.
